Combining schools will benefit students, taxpayers

Combining schools will benefit students, taxpayers

While some Central students will move to Sullivan East, the rest will attend a new super high school of some 1,700 students, rivaling Kingsport's Dobyns-Bennett. Sullivan East will be remodeled and, in about 15 years, replaced.

PC Police and PETA take on beloved Dr. Seuss

August 9th, 2015 11:30 am by Editorial Board

PETA is concerned that the book will cause children to want to have exotic pets like birds, a parrot maybe. That's not a good thing in PETA's view which suggests that if children wish to adopt an animal, it should be "a rabbit or a puppy."

It's time to bid farewell to dollar bill and penny

August 8th, 2015 11:30 am by Editorial Board

Dollar bills cost more to produce than they're worth. Every other Western economy has gotten rid of this lowest denomination bill, and it's well past time we did too. And with it, the useless penny.

Letters: Combine the three school systems

August 4th, 2015 11:04 am by Letters to the Editor

Since the monies from a huge proposed tax raise will be shared among three school systems, Sullivan, Bristol and Kingsport, wouldn't the only logical answer be the consolidation of these systems?

Commissioners must seek out accurate information

August 3rd, 2015 10:15 am by Editorial Board

The Sullivan County health insurance plan is more expensive than the school system's counterpart. What part of that do some commissioners not understand? Maybe some of them are too busy meeting in private to do the public's business

Opinion: America should replace prisons with workhouses

July 31st, 2015 9:59 am by Editorial Board

Great Britain put poor folk in workhouses; convicts were put on ships, taken halfway around the world and dropped off in Australia. We need workhouses in America because locking people up so they can idle away the hours and days is not cost efficient.

Stop picking on property owners

Stop picking on property owners

July 30th, 2015 9:30 am by Letters to the Editor

I don't want a wheel tax, but why is it that every time the city or the county needs more money, they put it all on the property owners? How many thousands of people own nothing but a car and a cell phone? When are they going to start paying their way?
